These are not really Frequently Asked Questions, but instead what I believe will be frequently asked questions.

What is “Death Is Gain”?
Despite the name, this is not a neo-goth site about death or suicide. First and foremost it is a place for me to showcase my graphic work and express myself creatively.

Is this a “goth” site that focuses on death?
No, but I do love gothic architecture, medieval stuff and fantasy literature. I did dress like a vampire one Halloween when I was a kid, so I don’t know if that counts.

Is this a “pro-death” site?
Only in the sense that we must daily “die” to ourselves. “for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Romans 8:13 (NASB). Besides that, no I am not friends with Jack Kevorkian.

So, what does the name “Death Is Gain” mean?
Short version: The name comes from the verse “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” – Phil 1:21 (NASB). There is a longer story here, if you’d like to read it.

Why the dark imagery?
Good question. I’m not sure. It’s always been my style. For one, it goes a long with a lot of the music I listen to. Second, I just like it. Honestly, I’m not one of those horror movie watching, dress in black, pale skinned, body modified types that has a house that looks like it was owned by the Addams Family. If you met me in real life, you’d think I was an average Joe. The Bible talks a lot about dark things as well as good things. The dark things speak of what we have to watch out for in life. Warnings. The good things speak to what will be our reward in Heaven as well as to what we can achieve by following and obeying God. I feel that as long as it is done well and with a good intentions behind it, it is acceptable.

What inspires you?
Honestly a lot of things. For the most part a phrase will pop into my head, and mental imagery follows. Bands that write great music is also a great inspiration. The insatiable desire to create is one of the most driving forces in my life. As soon as I am done with a piece, I am actively seeking out my next one. Believe it or not, the Bible is a source for a lot of my stuff and wanting to convey an aspect of it or it’s ideology. I love the artwork of the Pre-Raphaelites as well as the illustrations of N.C. Wyeth and Frank Frazetta. The Dean brothers work with bands has always been one of those things I could study for hours. Either that, or it was all those b-grade 70’s horror movies my mother used to watch about people taking a wrong turn on a country road and ending up running into a coven of satanic Amish farmers. No wonder I couldn’t sleep at night and drew instead.

Will you work for free?
Only if you give away your product for free. 😉 Like everyone else I have a family to feed, as well as I do a lot of this on my free time, which cuts into time spent with my family.

What are your rates?
Almost no project is the same, and therefore the rates are different. I need to know exactly what you are looking for, for me to give an honest quote.

Is the “Pulp” artwork for sale?
Yes. Most of this was created when I had nothing to do at work, and wanted a creative outlet. So if you like something, drop me an email, and we’ll work something out. All of the work viewed here is layered Photoshop files, so everything can be altered and suited to your taste.

Why do you call it “Pulp” artwork?
“Bargain Bin” and “Five and Dime” sounded too cheap. The regular artwork takes time. The “pulp” artworks are done relatively quickly. They are mostly made up of stock photos layered in photoshop, with additional doctoring. I liken them to the pulp fiction novels of the past. Hence the name. This doesn’t mean that they are crap, as some of the novels weren’t, just quick, easy and inexpensive.

Is there any bands that you’d like to work with?
Sure. A lot of the bands from early Christian metal: Tourniquet, Deliverance, Rob Rock, Living Sacrifice, Bloodgood, Mortification, etc., as well as some great new bands like The Showdown, Becoming the Archetype, Red, War of Ages and such. Any band that is making a positive difference in the metal field.

Is there anything else?
I only wear black, because it is slimming, but not so much in the hot sun. I don’t wear make-up, nail polish, leather or spikes. If I had hair, it wouldn’t be black. I don’t go by some fanciful name like ‘Galgothora’ or such. I have no ‘tats’ or piercings. I like going to the mountains with my family. Also I can bake a mean batch of cookies!
